This sizable freeform fire agate gemstone from Slaughter Mountain, Arizona, weighs 50.00 carats and measures approximately 34.5 x 24.2 x 8.0 mm at its largest dimensions. It showcases vibrant orange and red tones accented by flashes of green crackle. The stone is finely polished with a gently curved base, suitable for use in high quality jewelry or as a collector’s piece. Images were captured both indoors under full spectrum lighting and outdoors in natural sunlight to highlight its full visual appeal.

The vibrant colors in fire agates result from the Schiller effect, similar to that seen in mother-of-pearl and opals. This phenomenon arises from alternating layers of silica and iron oxide that diffract light, producing the characteristic interference colors known as fire. Optimal lighting is essential to reveal the full fire display, as under dimmer conditions these gemstones tend to appear darker with a brownish hue.

Slaughter Mountain Fire Agate Information

Slaughter Mountain is famed for producing exceptionally vibrant fire agate gemstones, celebrated for their mesmerizing play of color and intricate internal banding. The fire agates from Slaughter are a treasure trove of beauty for collectors and carvers which prize this locality for its mesmerizing gemstones, high quality rough and exquisite mineral specimens.

Slaughter Mountain fire agates often features multiple stacked layers of limonite fire banding, which when cut creates dynamic flashes of vibrant red, orange, green, purple, and even electric blue fire displays.

The all-natural rough mineral specimens often feature wonderful druzy quartz crystal formations which add sparkle and texture to the stone’s surface. Some pieces also have a protective chalcedony cap which preserves the vivid fire layers beneath and enhances the carving potential. These natural features make Slaughter Mountain fire agate ideal for lapidary artists who seek material that allows for deep carving and a high contrast polish which reveals the stone’s full spectrum of fiery brilliance.
