This expertly carved Slaughter Mountain fire agate cabochon weighs 8.9 carats and measures approximately 20.3 x 11.4 x 4.8 mm. It features deep earthy browns and burgundy reds, accented by shifting hues of red and orange. Crafted by artist TD Waddell, the stone has a flat base and detailed grooves that highlight its unique qualities. Part of the gem showcases a striking sagenite crystal fire effect. Its flat bottom makes it perfect for sophisticated jewelry designs or as a distinctive addition to a fire agate collection.
Images were captured both indoors under full spectrum lighting and outdoors in natural sunlight to highlight its full visual appeal. The vibrant colors in fire agates result from the Schiller effect, like that seen in mother-of-pearl and opals. This phenomenon arises from alternating layers of silica and iron oxide that diffract light, producing the characteristic interference colors known as fire. Optimal lighting is essential to reveal the full fire display, as under dimmer conditions these gemstones tend to appear darker with a brownish hue.
